Born in Russia, he directed several short films before making his first feature film Waxie Moon in Fallen Jewel in 2015. He then wrote, produced, and directed two seasons of the critically acclaimed comedy web-series Capitol Hill. In 2017, his autobiographical short film Little Potato won numerous awards including the Jury Prize at SXSW. In 2020, he participated in the collective film New Queer Visions: Seeing is Believing. Potato Dreams of America, based on his childhood, is his second feature film.
