He wrote or co-wrote screenplays for four Martin Scorsese films: Taxi Driver (1976), Raging Bull (1980), The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), and Bringing Out the Dead (1999). He also wrote and directed about 20 films, including American Gigolo (1980), Mishima (1985) or more recently First Reformed (2017), which earned him his first Academy Award nomination.
