Jean Paul Civeyrac studied philosophy at the University of Lyon before enrolling in la Fémis in Paris, where he directed his short film Life According to Luc, selected in competition at the 1991 Cannes Film Festival. Six years later, he shot his first feature film, Neither Eve Nor Adam, followed by the films Les Solitaires (2000), Fantômes (2002), Jury Prize winner at the Belfort Film Festival, Man’s Gentle Love (2002) and All the Fine Promises, which won the 2003 Jean Vigo Prize. He went on to direct Through the Forest, presented at the 2005 Toronto Film Festival, Young Girls in Black, selected for Cannes Directors’ Fortnight in 2010, My Friend Victoria (2014) and A Paris Education, presented at the 2018 Berlinale in the Panorama section. Jean Paul Civeyrac is also an author and teaches at la Fémis, Paris VIII University and the Cours Florent. “Écrit entre les jours,” a collection of writings on film and music, was published in 2014 by De l’Incidence Éditeur, and “Rose pourquoi,” an essay on cinema, by POL in 2017. His feature film Une femme de notre temps, starring Sophie Marceau, was selected for the last Locarno Film Festival and will be released in theaters at the end of the year.
