He developed his passion for filmmaking at a young age.In 1960, he founded his own production company, Les Films 13, and directed his feature debut The Right of Man. In 1966, he directed A Man and a Woman, which garnered the Palme d’Or and two Academy Awards among other prizes. In a career spanning over 50 years, he directed 50 films, including Live for Life (1967, Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film), Itinerary of a Spoiled Child (1988, César Award for Best Actor to Jean-Paul Belmondo), Les Misérables (1994, Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film), Roman de gare (2007, Cannes selection), or more recently The Best Years of a Life (2019, Cannes selection).
