Born in New Zealand, he grew up in Australia where he studied cinema at Melbourne’s Swinburne Film School. In 2000, he directed his feature debut Chopper, hailed by the critics and in which he revealed to the world the actor Eric Bana. His second film, western The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, starring Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck, premiered at Venice and Deauville in 2007. He reunited with Brad Pitt five years later with crime film Killing Them Softly, selected in competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
