About

Born in Orimattila in Finland, he never entered the Finnish Film School as he was suspected to be “too cynical”. His minimalist style is all his own and he managed to stick totally to the realities of the real world that only the 35 mm film makes possible. A Cannes Film Festival regular, many of his films won an award on the Croisette such as Drifting Clouds (1996 Ecumenical Jury Prize), The Man without a Past (2002 Grand Prize), Le Havre (2011 FIPRESCI Prize) and recently Fallen Leaves (2023 Jury Prize).
