He devel­oped his pas­sion for film­mak­ing at a young age.In 1960, he found­ed his own pro­duc­tion com­pa­ny, Les Films 13, and direct­ed his fea­ture debut The Right of Man. In 1966, he direct­ed A Man and a Woman, which gar­nered the Palme d’Or and two Acad­e­my Awards among oth­er prizes. In a career span­ning over 50 years, he direct­ed 50 films, includ­ing Live for Life (1967, Gold­en Globe for Best For­eign Film), Itin­er­ary of a Spoiled Child (1988, César Award for Best Actor to Jean-Paul Bel­mon­do), Les Mis­érables (1994, Gold­en Globe for Best For­eign Film), Roman de gare (2007, Cannes selec­tion), or more recent­ly The Best Years of a Life (2019, Cannes selection).
