His first fea­ture film The Sta­tion Agent pre­miered at Sun­dance in 2003. His sec­ond film The Vis­i­tor won the Grand Prize at the 2008 Deauville Amer­i­can Film Fes­ti­val. Spot­light, which he co-wrote and direct­ed in 2015, won many prizes, includ­ing the Acad­e­my Award for Best Pic­ture and Best Orig­i­nal Screen­play. He also co-wrote the ani­mat­ed film Up (2009), and served as exec­u­tive pro­duc­er for the TV series 13 Rea­sons Why (2017), while direct­ing two episodes.
